About 60 people attended a candidate forum last night (March 23) that featured the Hagerstown City Council and mayoral candidates. The forum was hosted by the League of Women Voters of Washington County and was held at the Washington County Free Library on 100 S. Potomac Street in downtown Hagerstown.

Candidates were given two minutes each to introduce themselves and their positions to potential City of Hagerstown voters and interested parties. Following opening statements, candidates were asked questions in a six-round format, with one minute to respond to each question. Subsequent the six questions that candidates were given in advance, the moderator accepted questions from audience members to pose to the candidates. Concluding the forum, each candidate was asked to explain why they believe they are the best candidate for office.

All four mayoral candidates attended the forum, including incumbent Mayor David S. Gysberts, former Mayor Robert Bruchey, Rachel Cooper and Steven Hemstreet Jr.

Council candidates who attended the forum include incumbent Kristin B. Aleshire, Paul D. Corderman, Emily Keller, Dot McDonald-Kline, incumbent Lewis C. Metzner, incumbent Donald F. Munson, incumbent Penny May Nigh, Colin Ploscaru and Carlos Reyes.

Aaron C. Smith and Brandon Scott Boldyga were unable to attend the forum.

Primary day is set for April 26. Hagerstown residents will winnow the candidate field to ten council candidates and two mayoral candidates for the November general election. City elections are nonpartisan.

Below is the video I captured of the candidate forum. Please be sure to turn up the sound on your computer or smart phone.
