Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz

Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz (R) announced Wednesday that she’s running for governor in 2022.

Schulz is the first high-profile Maryland Republican to lunch a 2022 gubernatorial bid.

She is a former Frederick County state lawmaker who was tapped in December 2014 by then-Gov.-elect Larry Hogan (R) to serve as Maryland’s Labor secretary, formally known as the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Hogan appointed Schulz in December 2018 to serve as the state’s Commerce secretary.

Schulz’s campaign website, launched Wednesday, features an embedded video of Schulz explaining her decision to run.
