In December 2017, the Washington County Republican Central Committee selected then-Hagerstown City Councilman Paul D. Corderman (R) to complete the remainder of Brett Wilson’s term in the Maryland House of Delegates for District 2B.
In October 2017, then Maryland-Gov. Larry Hogan (R) appointed state Del. Brett Wilson (R) to the Washington County Circuit Court after Judge M. Kenneth Long, Jr. retired.
Maryland Legislative District 2-B covers most of the City of Hagerstown.
Washington County’s Republican Central Committee forwarded Corderman’s name to Mr. Hogan, who affirmed the Central Committee’s selection and officially appointed Corderman to the Maryland House of Delegates to serve out the remainder of Judge Wilson’s term.
Brett Wilson, a Republican, won the state house seat in 2014 by defeating former state Del. John P. Donoghue, a Democrat.
Mr. Corderman was one of three applicants to apply for the vacancy.
The two other Republican applicants to apply were Laura Spessard Herrera, a financial adviser with RBC Wealth Management, and Donald “Donny” Ravas, then-president of the Hagerstown Tea Party and CEO of Dell Transport courier service.
The appointment process was held at the Alice Virginia and David W. Fletcher Branch of the Washington County Library and included public comments from over a dozen residents.
Among the speakers were then-Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II and former state Del. Paul Muldowney, both of whom supported Corderman’s appointment.
Jerry DeWolf, then-chairman of the Washington County Republican Central Committee, noted that associate member Randy Leatherman was unable to attend the meeting.
Following public comments, the committee deliberated privately for about an hour before announcing Corderman’s selection.
Mr. Corderman subsequently resigned from the Hagerstown City Council and was sworn in as a Maryland state delegate.
