Businessman David Trone will announce tomorrow via social media that he is entering the Democratic primary in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District, according to Trone campaign aide.
The wealthy co-owner of Total Wine & More is predicted to become an instant frontrunner in the race to succeed Rep. John Delaney (MD-6), who announced last Friday that he is seeking the Democratic nomination for president of the United States.
Trone, who lives in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District, is no stranger to running for Congress.
Just last year, Trone placed second in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District primary that saw several Democratic heavy-hitters face off against one another. Trone spent nearly $13 million of his fortune to place behind now-Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-8).
Trone is likely to be joined in a primary by Maryland House Majority Leader Bill Frick (District 16), Maryland State Senator Roger Manno (District 19) and Delegate Aruna Miller (District 15). Andrew Duck, a former Democratic nominee in CD-6, was the first Democrat to file to run in the district. Of the candidates mentioned, only two live within the boundaries of the 6th District – Duck and Miller.
