Rebecca Smondrowski, a Montgomery County Board of Education member, is considering dropping her bid for an at-large seat on the Montgomery County Council to run for state delegate in District 17, according to multiple sources familiar with Smondrowski’s plans.
The two-term Montgomery County Board of Education member announced last November that she would join the crowded at-large field, telling Bethesda Beat and A Miner Detail that her “experience on the Board of Education, at the state level and within my community, has prepared her to be a robust advocate and champion for the needs of all Montgomery County residents.”
Sources close to Smondrowski told A Miner Detail that county residents and elected officials are encouraging Smondrowski to run in the District 17 Democratic primary.
District 17 encompasses swaths of Gaithersburg, Rockville, Germantown, North Bethesda and Aspen Hill.
Smondrowski would be facing off against Democratic incumbents Kumar P. Barve, James W. Gilchrist and Andrew Platt. Rockville City Councilmember Julie Palakovich Carr is also facing off against the three Democratic incumbents.
State Sen. Cheryl C. Kagan (D) is expected to run for re-election in the District 17 Senate seat.
Smondrowski previously worked for state Sen. Roger Manno (D-19) as a legislative aide prior to running for the Board of Education.
