The Montgomery County Green Democrats announced yesterday in a press release a list of 25 Democratic candidates the organization is endorsing for Maryland’s June 26 primary.
The press release states that the candidates “were selected by a vote of the club’s membership and reflect the members’ expectations that if elected, they will make protecting the environment a major policy priority.”
The Green Democrats received 50 completed questionnaires – 30 of which were from female candidates (60%). The organization endorsed 25 candidates in total, four of whom were female candidates (16%). While a majority of the questionnaires were completed by female candidates, 84% of the organization’s endorsements were handed off to male candidates.
One District 18 candidate who asked to remain on background told A Miner Detail, “So much for the year of the woman. Apparently, women can’t be environmentalists.”
The Green Democrats Election Committee evaluated all the candidate questionnaires who responded to its email and released its public list of “recommendations” via its website. However, several recommended candidates did not receive the group’s endorsement.

- State Delegate District 19 – Brian Crider, Vaughn Stewart and Charlotte Crutchfield (not endorsed)
- State Delegate District 20 – Lorig Charkoudian and Jheanelle Wilkins (not endorsed)
